The Guy's Group was founded by Russ Anderhalt, Dale Savage, Howard Reed, Joe Rash, Tom Petrick and 4 other men. Their wives were members of Newcomers, and some of them suggested the husbands create a similar social/activities group. The initial meeting was held in 2004 at Howard’s home in The Vineyards. Dale Savage remembers the organizational meeting: The basic rules were agreed to, and Howard was named President and tasked to find restaurant that would serve the group individually ordered breakfasts and separate checks. He remained President for a period of time, approximately 1 year when he moved to Venice, FL where he still lives.

I had been friends with Howard for several years having moved to The Vineyards in 2001. He sponsored me in 2005 to become a member and participate in the limited number of activities at the time.

We were meeting at Sam Snead’s Restaurant, now out of business, at the east end of the Publix shopping center on Vanderbilt Beach Rd. There were maybe 15 or 20 guys, and several were added at each meeting, so the club seemed to grow rapidly. We soon outgrew the restaurant and began looking for a venue that could serve 50 or 60 guys at a time.

We had several short- or medium-term locations, outgrowing them also. Among them were IHop on Davis Bl, Karavas Greek Restaurant, and The Hilton Hotel, but they declined to continue the practice so that led to a scramble to find another location.

Several members lived at Lely Resort and reported The Players Club would accommodate our group, Tiburon CC, and Kensington CC served us well for several years alternating with The Player’s Club. Lely remains a principal venue for The Guys Group along with Forrest Glen CC.

Membership has grown to 140 guys with over 20 regularly scheduled activities, a Holiday Gala Event which is attended by over 120 people annually and other events of interest throughout Florida.
